THE CARTES DU CORPS/BODY MAPS PROJECT

The project is now in its 9th year of activity, between France and South Africa.

Begun in 2008 for the exhibition “Mapping Cultural Echoes” of the Voyage Ensemble, a Journey Together group (Scalabrini Centre for refugees, Cape Town, www.scalabrini.org.za) at the "Harare International Festival of the Arts" in Zimbabwe, the Body Maps project gave rise to a series of workshops and exhibitions in 2009 and 2010 of works created by users of the Scalabrini Center who had been victims of xenophobic attacks.

The works were exhibited in Graulhet as part of “Femmes de Mars” in 2008 and served as the point of departure for the Cartes du Corps project, centered on issues of identity - a project developed since 2009 in the French town of Graulhet with the support of the town and the region.

Noteworthy among the exhibitions of the works between 2009 and 2016 : “Tangible, Invisible”, at Cape Town Library, “Femmes de Mars” 2010 and 2013 and “Traversées Africaines 2014” in Graulhet, Tarn “Unite Africa” at the Centre d’art les Mazades in Toulouse and at the Scalabrini Center in Cape Town, AMKA / AWAKE ! 2013 - 2016 at the Scalabrini Center in Cape Town,  Artistes en Bien-être, Forum de Graulhet, March 2016 , Colis Suspects "ça collectif en liberté !" ACAC Graulhet - Tarn, June 2016.

In 2013, Association 1,2,3 Les Timides received funding through the Local Cultural Contract program of the city of Graulhet for the production of a manual (“Manuel Pratique des Cartes du Corps”), a tool for research and sharing aimed at participants and the general public as well as providing guidance for practitioners.

The Body Map project “Wealth Inside, Body Mapping” was selected for participation in the Kampala Biennale in August 2014.

Clients of the Scalabrini Center are offered  regular series of  art-therapy workshops since 2013 as part of the AMKA/EVEIL programme.

A TOOL FOR SOCIAL MEDIATION, RESEARCH AND SHARING

Free and open to all thanks to ongoing support from the town of Graulhet (France) and the Scalabrini Center in Cape Town (South Africa), the workshops greet groups of five to twelve people around a theme dealing with identity and parenting. The project has allowed the integration and mixing of social and ethnic groups, with participants joining through word of mouth. Participants bond, the Body Maps grow and develop throughout the life of the workshop, transform themselves through their interpretation by others.

At the end of each series of workshops, that were worked on horizontally are raised and exhibited, taking on a new perspective.

“Exhibiting these works is an integral part of the therapy : the works become history, the trace of a process, a thinking out, a progression. These works, in which Beauty is not an objective, have an esthetic appeal of their own, one that resonates.”
Sylvie Groschatau, Processus créatifs en Art-thérapie - éditions Profac 2009

WOOD ZILL LLA RULE AT OUDE MOLEN VILLAGE IN CAPE TOWN - Workshop October 2014

Taking these kids to a camp to us is already an achievement.
We have high hopes that when they leave your place these kids won't be the same again. Even us as their leaders will come ut of the camp with more experience and skills that will later help us in inter-acting with them better and productively in future.

We would love them to take part in most if not all of the activities you offer in your place. We would also love to see them getting hands on, wise words from time to time from your team will be much appreciated.

SYL’BATIK Batik classes

batik classes at Oude Molen Syl'Batik

What we do :

Batik is a technique of wax-resist that originated in Indonesia and is used all over Africa. Colours are applied onto the fabric with a spouted tool called a tjanting, a brush or a stamp. The applied wax resists dyes and therefore allows the artisan to colour selectively.
You will experience during the course of the workshop a unique technique of hand painted batik which allows for a greater variety of colours and patterns, contrasts and harmonies.

What else you should know ?

Beginner or confirmed Designer, Sylvie's expertise will help you create your own special artwork.

About Syl’Batik :

Batik is my passion. I use a tjanting, patterns, colours, and transparencies to create artworks and fashion. Originally Parisian, I lived and worked in Cape Town’s fabulous Oude Molen echo Village for 20 years, creating as Syl’Batik.

I opened my new studio in France where I will share with you my unique technique of hand painted Batik in a friendly environment.

SYL’BATIK

Hand crafted original creations

From fashion to accessories to home decoration, theatre sets and events, the versatility of Syl’Batik allows a wide variety of patterns, colours, size and shapes to explore the artist’s whims, client’s themes and current trends.

Whatever your needs and ideas,  Syl’Batik will create unique pieces to enhance your event and lifestyle.

Let us colour your desires !

Creation of unique pieces :

Syl’batik  has developped a unique technique of hand painted batik on silk and cotton. She uses tjanting, patterns, colours and transparencies to create large original artworks that participate every year to events and exhibitions as well as being in private collections, in France, Mexico and South Africa.

Inspiration : The formidable nature of Africa and France’s colourful landscapes combine in my work to provoke a sense of “colour-fullness” which I like to associate with transparencies.
Process : I use tjanting (which is a spouting tool traditionally used in Java to design patterns using hot wax) layers, colours and transparencies to create large original hand painted artworks on silk and cotton.
Batik is an ancient printing technique on fabric using WAX as a resist.  Unlike traditional Batik I do not use dye baths but hand paint every inch which allows me a wide variety of colours and super-impositions.motifs.

The creative process is quite physical : the pieces are often 350+ x 220 meters which I “layer” with wax and paint. It is a long term process where patterns and colours are applied successively to create intricate motifs.

Chiapas, Mexico, 1997. Working on large satin pieces, using lights and transparencies my Batik participated to the Chamula Indigenous Festival and a few months later, I put up my first exhibition with Galeria Mas Medula in Mexico City  : 8 large Batik were sold on the first night. So there was passion and incentive!
I made Cape Town my home where I started creating under the name of Syl’Batik.
I have, through all these years, developed a very unique technique of Batik almost obsessively detailed and hand painted. I work mostly on silk and cotton to create artworks for Events and on commission. I associate with tailor LC Collection to create my own range of home decoration and accessories and with Fashion Warior Masa Mara to create our range of men and women’s wear.
