ART THERAPY : Thoughts on Art Therapy

"...most events are inexpressible, and take place in a sphere that no word has ever entered. Most inexpressible of all are works of art, existences full of secrets whose life continues alongside ours, while ours is transitory.” Rainer Maria Rilke

Art Therapy offers individuals a process of personal evolution and development through artistic expression.

The art therapist provides accompanying measures that allow a person to express, to give shape and to work out the said, and the inexpressible in such a way as to connect and give meaning to these various aspects of the self in a dynamic process of change.

Creation & Transformation : "Create opportunities so that encounters can happen.” Henri Maldiney.

The various techniques suggested by the art therapist add a dimension of grounding in physical sensations. Sharing the work space with other participants facilitates a turning outward,   especially during group activities, thus combining the dual aims of opening up and turning toward others.

What can’t be achieved
With one beating of the wings
Must be reached by limpingBetter limp than be lost with all hands.
(Anonymous poem quoted in Sigmund Freud’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle)

“THINKING OUT ART THERAPY”

“Art Therapy hasn’t finished drastically upheaving the landscapes of psychotherapy and art. This new conceptualization centers the subject as a creator of artistic expression so that he may become more of a creator in his own life. It is the art of using the devices within visual arts, stage work, music and writing as means of working indirectly on the self so that the creation serves a transformative process. Art therapy uncovers here origina detailedl concepts illustrated in treatment protocols, pedagogy, personal development, the relationship with others, and art history. It is part of a change of mentalities that promotes accompanied symbolization as a social project.” Jean-Pierre Klein (PUF October 2012)

Jean-Pierre Klein : A pioneer of art therapy in France and in Spain, Jean-Pierre Klein is the author of numerous books, supported notably by Paul Ricoeur or Jean Duvignaud, such as the “Que Sais-je” on art therapy. Consulting psychiatrist in French hospitals, Research Director in psychology and playwrite, he heads the INECAT (Institut national d’Expression, de Création, d’Art et Thérapie), the first State-accredited school to deliver professional training leading to degrees as Artistic Mediators and Art Therapists.

The creative act is a process through which a person can re-create and repair his inner world.
