BODY MAPS

Body Mapping is an Art therapy technique developed by the San or Bushmen people of South Africa where image associated with words is used as a healing power to help retrace a story, a memory.

A dynamic therapy

The imagery is called upon to relate, to go back in time, to retrace events, to place them in context, to give them meaning. Over time, the group sessions allow the integration of individual works into a whole: the Body Maps.

Participants draw each others’ body contours then “image” their silhouettes with paint, pastels, collages, batik and drawing, the way they would illustrate a journal, creating a portrait that relates and deciphers a message.

The life size works are created in common and individually. This allows participants to overcome their shyness and their fear of rejection, allowing each one to develop a personal reflection, at his or her own rhythm, thus opening up a potential space for growth.

BODY MAPS WORKSHOPS 2013 - 2017

AMKA/AWAKE - Scalabrini Centre, Cape Town

www.scalabrini.org.za

AMKA is a Swahili word which means to wake up. It is a Welfare Women’s Programme initiated in 2013 at the Scalabrini Centre, Cape Town.

The Objective of the AMKA Project is to raise self-esteem among the selected participants who have experienced trauma through war in their country and/or xenophobia as refugees in South Africa and empower them to be productive, self-sustaining and respected in their communities, striving to lessen dependency from Welfare Desk. They will be offered classes in literacy as well as life skills and counselling throughout the duration of the project.

The focus of the art therapy workshops, which open the AMKA sessions for the selected female participants is to promote group cohesion, trust and discipline as well as help assess individual needs and strengths. The 5 days sessions, facilitated by Sylvie Groschatau-Phillips, aim at building self esteeem to enable the participants to take full chance of the learning process offered to them through the AMKA project at the Scalabrini Centre.

Eventually, the sessions create a support group; a place open to mutual understanding, integration, acceptance of self and of others. An opportunity to build up a feeling of self-worth, while pursuing a personal and global reflection on themes linked to identity, fears, hopes and personal aspirations. A Space Of Self allowing the development of self and collective energy through group work.

Body Mapping, Clay and Movement therapy are to be offered as part of the art-therapy programme, as well as punctual interventions by guest practitioners, such as the Transitory Labyrinth Theatre or the Flying Needle acupuncture project.

On the last day of each sessions, the artworks are on show at the Scalabrini Centre with the participants each doing their own presentation to the AMKA leaders, sharing and evaluating their experience.
