The Cape Town carnival is a glamourous celebration of African identity, diverse communities and the transformative power of creativity.
We create, build and play - together !
What is the Cape Town Carnival ?
Each year tens of thousands of spectators converge on Green Point’s famous Fan Walk to savour an eye-popping and mind-blowing parade of costumed performers and musicians, accompanying giant and spectacular moving floats.
The Cape Town Carnival is operated by a non-profit trust and its purpose is, not only to stage a world-class event, but to create jobs and stimulate our local economy.
The long-term vision of the Cape Town Carnival 2015 is :
To create a Carnival which showcases and celebrates the diversity of South Africa and which puts the Carnival on the international tourism calendar.
To provide opportunities for community participation in arts and culture and create a significant hub for the clothing, costume and set-building industries in the Western Cape.
To create an environment of social cohesion where tourists and locals can experience the glamour and creativity of the Carnival throughout the year.
In 2012 two South African artists, Guy Du Toit & Egon Tania, came into ACTA residence with Anzu as project developer, to create on the site a bronze foundry. Demystify and reveal a creative process and team work :
« The works will be quick and dirty due to time constraints – gorilla sculpture in nature – using the comic narrative as a unifying element, the two will borrow, comments on and steal ideas from each other, while using themes informed by the situation and each artists history to tell two stories cast in bronze ».
The project began with the city of Graulhet welcoming visitors all throughout the month of residence and at the end of work where exposure twenty bronze pieces and the "Bronze Casting Gorilla" film traces the process were presented.(see the film « Gorilla Bronze Casting »)
The experience is renewed in June 2015 : "Demystification Tour". Guy du Toit, Egon Tania, everything returned June, with the artist Kobus Lagrange residence. Brendhan Dickerson then joined by Carla Crafford, photographer, who made a documentary photograph on the project and proposed a Pinhole photography day ! Friends and members were once again invited to participate and create their piece: fingerprint and sculpture under the guidance of artists.
